ONE STROKE IS TOO MANY
If you’ve had a stroke due to an unknown cause, learn how you may be able to prevent another.
Strokes are caused by a sudden interruption in blood flow to a part of the brain or bleeding within the brain tissue.
There are two major types of stoke: hemorrhagic stroke and ischemic stroke. An ischemic stroke-for which no definite cause is found- is known as a cryptogenic stroke.
WHAT IS A PATENT FORAMEN OVALE?
A patent foramen ovale is a hole in the heart, between the right and left atrium. During fetal development, the foramen ovale allows blood to flow through the heart without having to go through the lungs. In about 33% of people, the foramen ovale does not completely close at birth, and is then called a patent foramen ovale (PFO).
