WHAT IS A PATENT FORAMEN OVALE?

A patent foramen ovale is a hole in the heart, between the right and left atrium. During fetal development, the foramen ovale allows blood to flow through the heart without having to go through the lungs. In about 33% of people, the foramen ovale does not completely close at birth, and is then called a patent foramen ovale (PFO).
